How do you make it?

  1. Start by adding your favourite clear spirit, such as vodka or gin, making sure it contains at least 30% alcohol. (Don’t use rum – it won’t have the same effect.) Note the bottling date and the type of spirit on the label. If possible, use leftover spirits you already have at home.
  3. Once filled, store the bottle in a cool, dark place. The wood chips will gradually release their warm colour and rich rum flavour. Taste it from time to time to experience how the flavour develops. The process takes around eight weeks, but you can also experiment with a longer maturation.
  5. After eight weeks, your homemade rum-inspired drink is ready. Filter or carefully pour before serving, making sure no wood chips end up in your glass. (And remember – never eat the chips!)
